The Wilhelm von Humboldt University Institute will offer a doctoral degree as the highest level of academic competence. The doctorate will be designed and implemented to meet the strict regulations of European Higher Education and will be fully accredited. Students will be expected to adhere to world-class research standards and present their findings at conferences and workshops around the world.

The Institute employs a rigorous admissions process and carefully reviews all submitted credentials and references. In addition, a sophisticated system of external second assessments and collaboration with prestigious academic institutions in other countries contribute to the quality of academic research emanating from the Institute.

The PhD program is limited to three years (with the possibility of extension). This supports both students and supervisors to be precise and to conduct concise and focused research. Participation in biannual research schools (either on-site or online) is mandatory and will facilitate exchange and networking among students, alumni, and staff. In addition, all doctoral condidates are requested to publish papers in relevant and peer-review scholarly journals.

Studying in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa

Studying in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa

The district town of Mansôa is located about 60 km from the capital Bissau. It is here, where the university institute “Wilhelm von Humboldt” was established, offering ideal conditions for teaching and research oriented towards West African realities. Amidst numerous initiatives from the Guinea-Bissau government, Mansoa still lacks key structures that allow for high-impact and enduring developement.

The Institute therefore views itself as both a sensor and a catalyst for change and development, taking note of the needs and expectations of the people and the main socio-economic developments in the community.

Study practically

In recent year, a number of so-called "laboratories" have been set up to put theory into practice and engage communities in key steps toward a better life for all.

The institute does explicitly go beyond a “poverty lab”, as poverty is a multi-dimensional phenomenon and both a cause and a result of a multitude of evolutionary processes. Consequently, the concept of complexity will be applied in all forms of research. Linear  and simple cause effect thinking has over and over again shown to be insufficient in taking development to a more appropriate and lasting solution with high impact. Accordingly, students will be familiarized with this concept and encouraged to apply it in different forms of research at all levels of academic seniority, from Bachelor thesis to PhD.
